Hello anonymous friend. As you should already know Constantinouple (city of Constantine) was created by Great Constantinos and it was the capital of the Byzantine empire which was greek. At 1453 the Turks captured Constantinople and they included it as part of the so called Ottoman empire. Until 60 years ago the city had it's original name. But because it was too greek for them they decided to change the name. So they used as a new name a phrase that was used by the habitats (majority greek and then turks) of Constantinople. The phrase was "Eis tin poli" (Istanbul) and so it has the name that the turks are using today. The phrase "Eis tin poli" is a greek phrase and it means "to the city" because Constantinople was also called "Polis" (city).
As you can understand Constantinople is sacred to us Greeks because for us it represents our stolen legacy from the Turks. So we consider Constantinople something sacred just like is Jerusalem to Juwish people.
